Everybody must come up with an original choice -- don't copy words that have been mentioned already BUT learn them and remember them if you didn't know them already.
1.With the exception of food, before taking Italian I was familiar with the word 'Ciao' because an old teacher used it as a greeting.

I have used Italian words before with the exception of food. I have used the word arrivederci.

Before taking Italian class, I have used Buongiorno and Buona sera to communicate with my teacher in high school.

I have used "ciao" and "grazie" before taking Italian class, because I live near an Italian neighborhood and I always hear people talking to each other using these two words.
