Discussione n. 19 . Scadenza 2 aprile

Your COMMENTS are important:

as you noticed from time to time I include exercises with and answer key.

I wonder if this is wise, and if I should make the answers available for all exercise.

BUT I need your feedback.

For an exercise with answers, the correct methodology YOU should follow should be:

1) Study the material (rules, grammar, examples.)

2) Complete the exercise, leaving blank items you don't know.

3) Compare your answers to the correct list.

4) UNDERSTAND the cause of your errors.

5) Do the exercise over and check again.

In your COMMENTS, please answer:

Is it preferable to have the exercises with the answers?

And in that case, is it realistic to expect that students will follow this method step by step, or will the majority simply copy the answers to get a good grade?

There is no "correct" answer. Your opinion counts.

AND REPY TO THE COMMENTS OF YOUR CLASSMATES

  1. I prefer the exercises with the answers. If there is no answer, I can not compare and understand the errors that I made. I believe that students will follow this method step b step.

    2. Yes, I also think that it is important to compare the answers and to understand errors. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to learn.

  2. I agree with Karry and also prefer the exercises with the answers at the end because it allows me to check my mistakes and get a better understanding of my exact errors. I feel that other students will follow this method step by step instead of copying the answers because in the poll you took, most students really wanted to learn and understand the language.

  3. FGC: thank you for your comments, and, please, keep adding.
I should have been clearer: I was not referring to OUR CLASS, but more in general to the course and future classes I will teach.
If I cannot rely on homework for evaluation of performance, I will probably have to resort to quizzes etc.
    Which method would be better:
quizzes and homework with answer keys
homework without answers and no quizzes?

  4. I think quizzes and homework with answer keys is better.
Since there is no practice between studying the material and doing homework (homework assignment IS the practice), therefore answer keys are important. A student will understand that without practicing and testing themselves with homework assignment, they will not be able to answer the quiz questions.
But I think it is important to balance the work load - there cannot be 2 homework assignments per week, quizzes and blog posts. If the workload is overwhelming, students can fall behind on topics, or get frustrated and give up altogether, so the right amount of practice assignments and quizzes is important.

I think that having the answers is beneficial for those who really have an interest in learning. Like others have said, I like having the correct answers so I can compare my own and learn from my mistakes. It is hard to say whether or not everyone will be truthful when submitting homework because probably students who have no interest in learning the language will just copy and paste from the answer key. Also, I think homework and quizzes with answer keys would be good as well.

  7. I think that having answers at the end of a homework is a good way of checking your own work too. Being that this is an online course, I believe anyone who agrees to take a course like this knows that it requires more effort. Although there is no real way of confirming whether a student is actually doing the work or simply copying and pasting it, I wouldn't penalize the students who actually take the time out to do the work. As far as quizzes I think that would be beneficial if the class met in an actual classroom. I also agree with what Lana said about too much work. Having two assignments and then a quiz would be too much. I find it a little difficult at times to finish the homework because of when it's due while working full time and taking 5 other classes.

  8. I agree with the other classmates that having the answer key is beneficial to check your work and study the material. If you have the ability to check you can narrow down what you need to work on and what your understanding as you go along.

  9. From my experience I am not used to have answer keys for homework. If the material is clear and the homework is an application of the material then answer keys are not necessary. I believe that the classical method is homework without answers and a full concentration on applying what you learned without help is more productive. Knowing that there are quick answers to questions may be a distraction or may give a false sense of trying to figure out yourself before revealing the answers. But, there can always be not graded practice questions with answer keys that if present anyone can take advantage of by doing them before taking the homework. And of course a clear explanation on your graded homework is helpful and necessary too.

  10. I prefer having answer key to homework. We can always look back at our mistakes and not make the same error again.

  11. I also agree that we should have answer keys to see where our mistake is, that way we can use our homework as a study guide. However those who use it as a cheat sheet are doing a disservice to themselves.

  12. I think it's good to include the answers to our exercises, because it allows us to check our answers and see if there's any mistakes. Our homework is a big part of the class, if we can check our answers that will help us a lot because sometimes we get a little confused about the materials and don't know what to do with some questions.
